The Experiment: Day 30

Today marks the thirtieth day of my beardedness.  I have received more compliments, which is nice.  I passed myself off as a complete professional when I was in DC last week.  It's now getting to the point where it's actually keeping my face warm.  Too bad the cool weather is almost over.

The beard gives me a slightly different persona.  I think it probably is making me look a bit older.  Some people haven't even recognized me in passing.

I'm contemplating getting a beard trimmer, but I'm holding off on that for now because I don't want to buy one if I don't end up keeping the beard.  I did buy some little scissors though to trim the more unruly regions.  What I really need to do though is to get a haircut.  My hair is just about to get out of control.  It has already started to slip into what I like to call "the wandering musician" realm a few times.

I'm still not seeing the coverage on my cheeks that I was hoping for.  If it doesn't come soon, I might have to call it quits.  I will not just have a goatee.  They just do not look good on me.  Only time will tell.

Time to pay a visit to SuperCuts.

The Experiment: Day 21

It has now been 21 days of beard cultivation for me.  It's actually starting to look kind of like a beard and less like the scruff of a lazy 28-year old.  I've had many people comment about it so far.  Everyone has been positive, though it's hard to know if they are being honest or if they are being nice.  The coverage on my cheeks is still not what I would like it to be, but it's getting there.  I need to go to Target in the next day or so to buy a little pair of scissors to trim the mustache hairs that are starting to creep down over my top lip.  I am going to DC for work later this week and still need to look like a professional.  Getting a haircut would probably help too.

Overall though, I'm pretty pleased with where things are going.  I have been shaving my neck regularly, but I will need to start grooming the top line on my cheeks soon too.  The best thing to happen recently is that the itching has gone WAY down.  It seems like the itchiness started to subside in the last week or so.  That was really my biggest concern, too.  I wasn't going to be able to keep a beard if I was going to be scratching at it all the time.

I'll check back in with a new picture soon.  Later this month, I go to visit Katie in Houston.  That will be the test.

A little bit happier than the last picture.  I just had a long, fun weekend.

Bad Dream

Shortly before I woke up this morning, I had a dream that I was cleaning up my beard with a beard trimmer (which I do not currently own).Somehow, I lost control of the trimmer and shaved off my right sideburn all the way up above my temple.  I went to a barbershop to see if they could "fix" it.  They just laughed at me and told me the best thing I could do for myself now is to shave my head and face and start all over again.  Just then I burst awake, thankful that two weeks of "work" had not been in vain.

The Experiment

I recently embarked on the journey that I believe every man should take at least once in his life: growing a beard. It started because I got lazy and didn't shave for six days. On the seventh day, I realized it was just about the longest I'd ever gone without shaving since I started shaving. I figured, what the heck? Let's try something new! I don't know if it's going to work or not. The coverage on my cheeks may do me in. In order to judge progress, I'm going to be posting pictures sporadically.

This is day 10.
(If you're wondering about the sour look on my face, well, I'm at work.)

The Wire: Omar and Maury

I love this exchange between Omar and Maury.  One of the few times the sleazebag gets put in his place.

Pulled Beef Tacos

Katie and I made these pulled beef tacos in the crockpot on New Year's Day. We topped them with pickled red onions and jalapeƱos, washing them down with Racer 5 IPA. It was a delicious meal. You can get the recipe here: http://smittenkitchen.com/2010/01/southwestern-pulled-brisket/
We substituted chuck for the brisket because we couldn't find brisket at the store. The result is that it cooks faster than the recipe recommends, necessitating less time in the slow cooker.
